Progress of the 7-Gt project in Comapa, Jutiapa, Guatemala.

On January 30, 2024, the municipality of Comapa in the department of Jutiapa, Guatemala, was visited as part of the activities of project 7-GT, funded by IDRC-CSUCA. The project, titled “Strengthening risk management in agri-food systems to contribute to food and nutritional security in the face of climate variability in the dry corridor of Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras 2023-2024,” addressed the challenges faced by local farmers and professionals. During this visit, communication was established with local farmers and professionals to learn about their experiences and needs related to agricultural management and climate change.

In collaboration with the farmers, a pilot area was identified for implementing the project activities. The cultivation system to be established was defined, and the necessary actions for preparing the land for planting were planned. Furthermore, the practice of rainwater harvesting to ensure the sustainability of crops in the region was discussed and agreed upon.

The active participation of the farmers and the direct interaction with them during this field visit were fundamental to better understanding the local conditions and adapting the project strategies to the specific needs of the Comapa farming community.
