PROJECT PILOT: ?PLASTIC WASTE PREVENTION TO REDUCE ITS IMPACT ON THE GUATEMALAN CARIBBEAN SEA THROUGH INNOVATIVE METHODS WITH THE PARTICIPATION OF THE ACADEMY, PRIVATE SECTOR AND COMMUNITY?, WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE CIRCULAR CARIBBEAN REGIONAL PROJECT.

Execution period: January 1, 2022-November 30, 2023.
The main objective of the project is the ?Prevention of plastic waste to reduce its impact in the Caribbean Sea of Guatemala through innovative methods with the participation of the academic sector, the private sector and the community? to improve the implementation of processes in Puerto Barrios, Izabal in the prevention of the entry of plastic garbage into the Caribbean Sea.
In the pilot area, local actors from public institutions, the private sector and/or civil society will each have to adopt a concept with actions to prevent the entry of plastic garbage into the Caribbean Sea and associations with multiple interests at the local level. they each have to implement the process of handling and preventing plastic waste in the Caribbean Sea.
Expected results:
– Eradicate 200 tons of plastic at the mouth of the Motagua River.
– Circulation for the village El Quetzalito, create recyclable pavers and cobble streets in the village.
– Education for neighboring Caribbean people: implement a curricular guide that can train school teachers in the lower basin of the Motagua river, in coordination with local actors such as the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN), the National Council of Protected Areas (CONAP) and the Ministry of Education (MINEDUC).
– Asphalting with plastic, a proposal for Guatemala: For the management of plastic waste, incorporate recycled plastics as an addition to asphalt in construction works. The proposal can be manually replicated at the national level.
– Regional events: Promote socialization, exchange of actions and the synergistic search for sustainability. The pilot sample can be an example that can be disseminated to other cities, municipalities and areas of another region.
– Promote regional events for socialization in the exchange of actions that seek synergy and sustainability.
